Should you hire a website copywriter or write it yourself?

Should you hire a website copywriter or write it yourself?

There’s a slightly awkward answer to this question when you’re asking a copywriter: Sometimes, you really don’t need one.

If you know what you want to say, understand your audience and have the time to turn that thinking into clear website copy, writing it yourself can make complete sense.

But there are also times when DIY copy starts costing you more than it saves: in time, indecision, missed opportunities and a website that never quite says what you meant it to.

So how do you know which camp you’re in?

You can probably write your website copy yourself if…

You’re clear on what your business actually does

This sounds obvious. It often isn’t.

If you can explain what you offer, who it’s for and why someone should choose you without disappearing down six different tangents, you’re already in a strong position to DIY your copy.

You don’t need a perfectly polished brand strategy first. You do need enough clarity to know what matters and what doesn’t.

You know your audience well

Good website copy isn’t just about explaining your business accurately.

It’s about explaining it in a way that makes sense to the person reading it.

If you know what your audience is looking for, what they’re worried about, what questions they need answered and what might stop them from getting in touch, you’ve got useful raw material to work with.

You have more time than budget

Writing your own website copy is one of the obvious places to save money when you’re building a business.

And that’s completely reasonable.

If paying for professional copy would mean compromising on something more urgent, DIY now and improve it later.

A website doesn’t need to launch with perfect prose. It needs to be clear enough to do its job.

Your website is fairly simple

A straightforward five-page site for a simple service business is a very different writing job from a website with multiple audiences, offers, journeys and conversion points.

The simpler the site, the more realistic DIY becomes.

You might want to hire a website copywriter if…

You know what you do, but you can’t seem to explain it

You’ve written the homepage approximately 47 times.

Every version is technically accurate. None of them quite sound right.

This is often where a copywriter earns their keep.

Not because they’ve got a secret thesaurus, but because they can take everything in your head, work out what matters most and turn it into something another human can understand quickly.

Your business has changed but your messaging hasn’t

Maybe you started with one service and now offer five.

Maybe your clients have changed.

Maybe you’ve moved upmarket, specialized, repositioned or simply got better at what you do.

If your website still describes the business you had two years ago, rewriting individual sentences probably won’t solve the problem.

You may need someone to step back and work out what the site needs to say now.

You’re too close to it

This is one of the biggest reasons people struggle with their own website copy.

You know too much.

Your customer doesn’t need all of that.

A good copywriter helps decide what they need to know first, what can come later and what can disappear entirely.

Your website has an important job to do

If your site mainly exists so people can check that you’re a legitimate business before emailing you, DIY copy may be perfectly adequate.

If you’re asking it to generate leads, sell expensive services, support a rebrand or convince people to choose you over strong competitors, the words carry more weight.

The more important the website is to your sales process, the stronger the case for investing in it.

You’re spending far too much time on it

There’s a point where doing something yourself stops being the cheaper option.

If you’ve spent weeks staring at an empty Google Doc, rewriting one paragraph or avoiding launching the site entirely, the cost isn’t just the copywriter’s fee anymore.

It’s your time.

And possibly the inquiries you could already be getting from a finished website.

What does a website copywriter actually do?

It’s not just “make the words sound better”.

A good website copywriter should help you work out:

  • what each page needs to achieve

  • who you’re speaking to

  • what information matters most

  • how to structure the page

  • what questions and objections need answering

  • where calls to action should appear

  • how your brand should sound

  • how to make the copy useful for people and search engines

The writing is the visible bit.

A lot of the value is in the thinking underneath it.

What if I want to write it myself but need some help?

There’s a middle ground.

You don’t necessarily have to choose between “write every word myself” and “hand the entire website over to a copywriter.”

You could:

  • write a first draft and pay for a professional edit

  • book a messaging or strategy session before you start

  • hire a copywriter for the most important pages only

  • get an audit of your existing site

  • work with someone to create the structure, then fill in the copy yourself

Sometimes a little outside perspective is all you need.

So, should you hire a website copywriter?

If you’re clear on your message, know your audience and have the time to write, give it a go yourself.

Seriously.

But if you’re stuck trying to explain what makes you different, your website needs to work harder or the whole thing has been sitting half-finished for six months, bringing in a copywriter can save a lot more than words.

The question isn’t really:

Can I write my own website? You almost certainly can.

It’s:

Is writing it myself the best use of my time and will the end result do what I need it to do? If the answer is yes, crack on. If not, that’s where we come in.
